Walnut Harvest

This week has been our harvest week on the farm, I have loved it, collecting the Walnuts is somehow very relaxing, but also back breaking as we have a good crop this year and when you are bending down picking them off the floor for over an hour your back seems to creak as you try to stand up. The Autumn sun and the leaves and the smell almost like a pine scent from the walnut as they leave their shells has a sort of comfort feel to it.

My other harvests on the farm has been the blackberries or brambles as I call them, again our hedgerows have been full of them, the sloe berries are also ready now and the cooking apples so it has at times looked like the harvest festival table in our kitchen, I love the feeling that nature has provided us with these things and I value them greatly.

Most of what we have picked will keep us going right through the winter and Owen my grandson expects his blackberry and apple crumble when he is here, all the children love to collect the berries as I think they see it as a kind of treasure hunt.

I must say to you all do try British walnuts they are not as big as the imported ones but they have a wonderful flavour and they are sweet never bitter unlike some of the imported ones, this seasons should be entering farm shops this week, enjoy.
